Fresh off their win for the North Shore News Readers Choice Awards for Best New Restaurant, Scratch Kitchen has a wonderful mix of branding, food execution and style. It’s not easy to win the best new restaurant award as there are so many new eateries and breweries coming to the area, so it goes without saying they are excellent at what they do. The restaurant is located just North of Cates Park and East of the Iron Workers Memorial Bridge in North Vancouver. They are currently doing takeout and delivery to satisfy your taste buds. We had the opportunity to chat with Clay Spalding to get to know him better, learn about their approach and dive deeper into the back story of the business. Check it out below!
How did you get started with your restaurant or brewery and what do you like about operating in North Vancouver?
Phil and I came from a larger corporate restaurant group and we wanted to find a spot where we could scale back the size of the operation and truly focus on the quality and experience. We were both passionate about creating food from scratch using whole ingredients and curating a local wine program showcasing some of British Columbia’s best wines.
Our local community has been incredibly supportive and we love being able to look out our windows and see the beautiful landscape the North Shore has to offer and out into the waters of Indian Arm.
What are your most popular food or drink items and your inspiration(s) in creating them?
Our artisan hand-crafted pizzas and local beer and wine.
We love pizza. My business partner is incredibly talented in the kitchen and has created some unique flavour combinations on a perfectly fermented dough. Simply put – We tried to create the best version of the stuff we love to eat and drink.
What do you currently offer for ongoing day to day specials or happy hour promotions?
Currently while we are just doing take out we are offering 50% off all wines. Also, we try to have a new feature pizza every couple weeks.
Before operating your restaurant or brewery what were you doing for work or a career?
Phil and I have both been involved in restaurants for many years. Combined experience of a couple decades.
Outside of operating your business what do you get up to for activities in your personal time?
Exploring the outdoors, working out, cooking, dining out, breweries and constantly trying to learn more about stuff I’m interested in.
Lastly, is there anything else you might want our readers to know about you or your business?
We make everything in our restaurant from Scratch. Doughs, bread, sauces, cashew cheese, pickles, etc! We take the extra steps and time to truly deliver a quality experience for our guests. And we are looking forward to serving you.
