CITY OF NORTH VANCOUVER – This morning Mayor Linda Buchanan was pleased to virtually join her mayoral colleagues from Burnaby, New Westminster, Vancouver, and the District of North Vancouver for the launch of the first ever ‘Mayors’ Food Bank Challenge’ in partnership with the Greater Vancouver Food Bank (GVFB).
“This past year has been difficult, but for some it has been harder than we can even imagine,” said Mayor Linda Buchanan. “Many challenges have been exasperated as a result of the pandemic, including food insecurity. I’m excited to partner with the Greater Vancouver Food Bank to raise funds that will support the growing number of people in need and bring a greater awareness to food insecurity.”
The challenge will take place from May 1-31. The goal is to raise at minimum $500,000 collectively for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. Each municipality has a specific minimum amount they are trying to fundraise based on population size. Mayor Buchanan, with the help of people in the City of North Vancouver, is striving to raise at least $25,000, with hopes to far surpass that target.
“Throughout the pandemic we have come together as a community to support one another. It is more important than ever we work together to feed hungry children, seniors, and families,” added Mayor Buchanan.
Quick Facts:
· According to a 2020 BCCDC survey, approximately 10% of people in the City of North Vancouver worry that their food will run out before they receive their next paycheck.
· On the North Shore the GVFB directly supports the North Shore Neighbourhood House, Sage Transition Housing, and the Canadian Mental Health Association.
· Donations can be made online through the GVFB or non-perishables can be dropped off in-person at the City Library, Fire Hall and RCMP headquarters.
· Harvest Project will receive 10% of donations raised by the City of North Vancouver.
