In this article we are going to help readers who might be around the world and considering moving here to understand what the neighbourhoods are for North Vancouver. There are many great places to live and call home, it just depends on what kind of lifestyle you are looking for. Now of course there are Edgemont Village, Lynn Valley Village and others, however we are going to focus on the Government definition of neighborhood in terms of how it relates to the City of North Vancouver (PDF) and the District of North Vancouver (PDFs) offices along with the annual census that takes place.

Deep Cove

Deep Cove is a small local, waterfront-oriented village centre, at the eastern edge of the District. Bounded by the Seymour community to the west, the waters of Burrard Inlet and Indian Arm, and the wilderness forests of the North Shore mountains, Deep Cove is one of the most scenic spots in the lower mainland. Home to world-class recreation opportunities, locals and visitors alike seek out Deep Cove to hike the trails, shop in the village, and paddle or sail up Indian Arm. A favourite shooting location for TV and film productions, and home to galleries, concerts in the park, and its own small stage theatre, the Deep Cove area includes the Cove Cliff, Dollarton, and Indian Arm neighbourhoods, as well as Deep Cove village.

Delbrook / Upper Lonsdale

Nestled at the forest’s edge between Upper Capilano to the west, Lynn Valley to the east, and the City of North Vancouver to the south, the Delbrook Upper Lonsdale community is a primarily residential area known for its stunning views of Vancouver, English Bay, the Lions Gate bridge and the North Shore mountains. The area features abundant park space and access to local hiking and biking trails and is home to a variety of recreational amenities. This community includes the Delbrook, Upper Delbrook, Norwood Queens, Carisbrooke and Braemar neighbourhoods. District Hall is located in this community, on Queens Road.

Lions Gate

Considered the western gateway into the District, and the first community you arrive in when you traverse the Lions Gate Bridge into North Vancouver, this area is home to several mature residential neighbourhoods, as well as the bustling commercial area along Marine Drive. Lions Gate is bounded to the west by the Capilano River and on the east by the City of North Vancouver, to the south by the Squamish First Nation, and the rail lines and waterfront industry that contribute so greatly to our economy, and on its northern edge by the TransCanada Highway. The community includes the neighbourhoods of Lower Capilano, Woodcroft, Pemberton Heights, Pemberton, and Norgate. Located at the crossroads of Marine Drive and Capilano Road, Lions Gate is one of the District’s key village centres, and will undergo a major revitalization over the coming years into a vibrant residential core for the area.

Lynn Creek

Perched near the Second Narrows Ironworkers’ Memorial Bridge gateway, and home to Seylynn, Bridgman, and InterRiver Parks, Lynn Creek is on its way to being reborn as a vibrant area in which to live, work, and play. Bounded on the North by Lynn Valley, on the south by our vibrant waterfront industries, on the west by the City of North Vancouver, and on the east by the TransCanada Highway and the Seymour neighbourhoods, Lynn Creek is fast becoming one of the District’s new town centres. Bisected by beautiful Lynn Creek and stunning nature trails, this community has a unique combination of proximity to natural amenities and an eclectic light industrial/commercial area, and is home to world-renowned Capilano University. The new homes being constructed in the core are all within walking distance of frequent transit service at the Phibbs Exchange, connecting to Vancouver, Burnaby’s Metrotown and stops across the North Shore.

Lynn Valley

Home to some of our most visited recreational areas and celebrated for its mountain village charm, Lynn Valley is one of the District’s longest-established neighbourhoods. Bounded by Upper Lonsdale to the west, Lower Lynn to the south, Lynn Creek to the east, and the rugged wilderness of the North Shore mountains to the north, Lynn Valley embraces nature at every turn. This community includes the neighbourhoods of Upper Lynn, Upper West Lynn, Lower West Lynn, Valley Centre, Central Lynn, Lynn Canyon, West Lynn Terrace, Boundary, and Kirkstone. Lynn Valley is one of the District’s new town centres and the community’s central hub is undergoing a major transformation into a vibrant residential and commercial core for the area.

Maplewood

Maplewood is one of the four Town Centres designated in the Official Community Plan (OCP). It is a unique place in the District, located close to the waterfront and diverse business and industry, and features an outstanding natural environment and open spaces, including the Seymour River and various creeks, Burrard Inlet foreshore and mudflats, Maplewood Farm, Cutter Island Park, and the Windridge Escarpment.

Seymour

The Seymour community covers the largest area in the District, encompassing the Riverside, Seymour Heights, Blueridge, McCartney Woods, Windridge, Windsor Park, Northlands, Parkway, Parkgate, Indian River, and Roche Point neighbourhoods. It is also home to the Tsleil-Waututh First Nation. Bounded by the Seymour River and its canyon on the west, Deep Cove to the east, Burrard Inlet to the south and the forests of Seymour Mountain to the north, Seymour is a family-oriented community with abundant recreational amenities. Residents in this area are minutes from the huge network of trails in the forests and the tranquil beauty of the Maplewood Mudflats nature preserve on the waterfront. The community is also home to the Mount Seymour ski facility, and boasts two golf courses.

Upper Capilano

Covering the slopes beneath Grouse Mountain, and defined by thick stands of mature evergreens in the ravines containing the Capilano River, and Mackay and Mosquito Creeks, Upper Capilano commands the northwest corner of the District. This area is known for its quiet windy roads and easy access to our network of forest trails, and it is home to several renowned tourist attractions, as well as the area’s commercial and community heart in Edgemont Village. The Upper Capilano area is bounded to the south by the TransCanada Highway and to the east by the Delbrook Upper Lonsdale community, and it includes the Grousewoods, Cleveland, Canyon Heights, Handsworth, Highlands and Edgemont neighbourhoods.
