Welcoming the New Year with Japanese Traditions
North Vancouver’s Sushi MAHANA is excited to introduce two exclusive dining experiences to celebrate the upcoming new year. These include a special New Year’s Eve Ōmisoka Dinner on December 31, 2023, and a series of Oshogatsu New Year Feasts from January 3 to January 6, 2024.

Elevated Dining Experiences
The Ōmisoka and Oshogatsu menus at Sushi MAHANA are the creations of Head Chef Hiroshi Hoshiko, along with Sous Chefs Rika “Ghinn” Ginnaga and Bryce Morris. These menus blend the traditional Kyushu-style sushi, known for its complex flavors, with classic Japanese New Year elements, offering a feast that is both a culinary art and a communal celebration.

Ōmisoka Dinner Details
On December 31, Sushi MAHANA will have two seatings for the Ōmisoka Dinner. In keeping with Japanese tradition, the dinner will conclude the year with a special meal. Highlighting the evening is the serving of Toshikoshi soba noodles, a year-end custom, following the omakase sushi courses. These noodles, traditionally consumed as temple bells ring at midnight, symbolize the transition into the new year.

The dinner will also feature awabi (abalone) in a unique snowy sauce made from snow crab and egg white, and guests will enjoy O-toso, a traditional herb-infused sake, believed to bring good health.

Oshogatsu Feast Celebrations
From January 3 to January 6, 2024, the Oshogatsu Feasts will honor the new year’s first days. These events will begin with an O-toso sake toast, symbolizing gratitude for the past year and aspirations for the new one. The feast includes symbolic dishes such as kazunoko (herring roe), kuromame (black soybeans), and ko-haku namasu (pickled daikon and carrot), representing various blessings and well-being.

Reflections from the Owner
Yuki Aida, the owner of Sushi MAHANA, reflects on the restaurant’s successful first year and is excited to share these traditional Japanese celebrations with the community, fostering a spirit of fortune, health, and unity.
